About

At first, I was indifferent to whiskey.

I know. I can barely believe it myself.

22 years of ignorance. Although I was ignorant of a lot of things for most of that time, due to the whole being a child issue that most of us have for the first decade and a bit of our lives.

It’s not as if I’d never heard of whiskey or lived in a time or place where there was a whiskey drought. People around me drank whiskey, but it just didn’t register as something I would really enjoy.

And then my sister got engaged. Little did I know, that as well as being a life changing experience for her, it would also be a life changing experience for me. For her, it would be a husband, a joint bank account and a mortgage, then children and school and all the things that go with that.

For me it was whiskey.

Because you see, my brother-in-law is a whiskey drinker.

At first, I had a glass just because it was polite. That’s what he offered and in order to facilitate whatever relationship I was supposed to have with this man marrying my sister, I accepted.

And then I accepted again.

This became a regular offering as my brother-in-law is a generous guy, and I found myself enjoying what had until now been a somewhat mysterious drink.

Soon I began to think of myself as a whiskey drinker but actually I was still ignorant. I realized this when one day, about six months after the initial glass of whiskey had been offered, my brother-in-law looked at me and said, ‘You seem to like whiskey. Maybe we should get you some of the good stuff.’ Turns out he has two stashes of whiskey. The good stuff, and what he offers to those who don’t know any better.

That’s where it all began. I hope I know a bit more about whiskey than when I started, but I want to ensure that no one else is as ignorant as I was about the fact that there’s something to know about when it comes to whiskey. Namely that it’s delicious!
